How to style striped carpets in your home

Striped carpets are very popular features of the modern home, and when styled right, they can make quite the statement.

However, knowing how to style a striped carpet effectively can be a difficult task, which is why we’ve put together our top 5 tips to help you make the most of your new carpet.

1. Match the room colour palette

Choosing the perfect striped carpet to complement your interior can be easily achieved by matching the room colour palette to your new carpet. Picking out a few key colours that you’d like to emphasise is a great way to pick a striped carpet that is going to look fabulous and stylish in your home.

One way of making a striped carpet look beautiful in a room is to choose one that has the same colours as the rest of the rooms. This way it will easily blend in and the pattern won’t even stand out that much. It doesn’t necessarily have to feature all the colours in the room but just the main ones or similar shades. You can also match it with some of your accent pieces in the room. See full text here…

Once you know the colour palette you’re working with, your home will soon start to come together and your striped carpet will easily help you to achieve all your interior visions.

2. Find your ‘stripe type’

The type of stripe you choose can impact the final result massively, so think carefully when deciding what stripe style you want to opt for. There are a number of different options you can choose from, so gathering samples might be a good way forward:

Vertical Stripes – If you’re looking for a traditional effect then vertical stripes are the way to go. These are the most commonly used style for walls, and are great for creating the illusion of height in a low-ceilinged room.

Horizontal Stripes – These are great for widening a room, and are regarded as a more modern, playful style than vertical stripes. Whatever you do, don’t be tempted to mix horizontal and vertical stripes in the same room or you’ll cancel out the effects you were going for in the first place.

Wide Stripes – Only use wider stripes on your walls if you’re working with larger rooms. If you use wide stripes in very small rooms you risk losing the impact of this punchy design element.

Narrow Stripes – As you can imagine, our advice here is the exact opposite of the above. Reserve narrow stripes for smaller rooms, as they can make bigger areas look too busy and cluttered.

Mixed Width Stripes  – Mixing skinny and wide stripes is a great idea for children’s playrooms or games rooms, as this is the most playful and adventurous way to style with stripes.

Once you’ve decided on your stripe type, it’ll then become much easier to find ways to style your carpet and ensure it looks nothing but great in your home.

3. Eye catching colours

Choosing the colour scheme of your striped carpet is an important decision. As well as considering the styling of the room, you should also consider what colourways would catch the eye of visitors to your home – and make the most effective statement. However, eye catching colours can be featured in both dark and light carpets, so making a decision on your carpets tone is an effective way to ensure you style your striped carpet perfectly.

Dark carpets

Darker carpets can make large rooms feel cosier. Just be careful to keep an eye out for lighting conditions, as rooms with less natural light will need a lighter shade so they don’t appear too dark. Darker carpets are generally better at hiding dirt and footwear marks, but light coloured dog fur/hair will show up a lot.

Light carpets

Smaller rooms can be made to feel larger by using lighter coloured carpets. Lighter neutral colours are great for creating a minimalist décor, whilst light and bright colours are great for making a bold design choice. Lighter carpets tend to show stains and dirt more readily than darker carpets. However, carpet designs like Berber are more stain resistant so you can remove them easily. See full text here…

Once you’ve decided on the colour scheme and tones of your striped carpet, you can then begin to pick out the most eye-catching colours to emphasise in your interior by styling cushions and furniture etc accordingly.

4. Striped carpets for stairs

If you’re looking to style your striped carpet in a way that’s bound to make a bold statement, opting to install it on your stairs is a great way to achieve just that.

Usually the staircase is a very important element in any home. So if you have one make sure you allow it to stand out. You can easily do that with a striped carpet. Vertical lines are more suited for a staircase than horizontal ones. The colours you choose can vary. For example, a wooden staircase could feature a carpet that has warm colours and earthy tones but if the wood has a light finish then brighter colours could look better. See full text here…

Striped carpets are an extremely popular carpet choice for stairs. If you’re wanting to make an effective yet stylish difference to your home, finding the perfect stripes for your stairway is a great way forward.

5. Don’t get too busy

One common mistake when styling striped carpets is going too overboard with the bright colours, bold designs, and combinations of patterns. You want your striped carpet to make a statement, so avoid any interior clashes by keeping it simple and allowing your carpet to shine independently.

When decorating with stripes it’s important to maintain a sense of balance. For example, if you’ve gone for striped walls, avoid using striped or patterned furniture. Plain, solid furniture will help balance out the look and keep your room from looking too busy. And likewise with the floor; if you’ve chosen a striped carpet, avoid adding stripes to your walls and ceilings or you risk creating a compressed, boxed-in effect. See full text here…
