Herringbone flooring

Herringbone flooring, which is the pattern made by parquet block flooring, is a huge trend in interior design and transforms any space with its distinctive character.  It is named after the herring fish as it resembles its bone structure, and dates back to Ancient Egypt. If you want to make an impression in your home these feature floors will give you a striking finish in any room.

How is it different to Chevron flooring?

It is easy to confuse herringbone and chevron flooring at first glance.  The main difference is that herringbone floors are rectangle boards, whereas chevron boards are cut at an angle. An easy way to tell between them is that herringbone has subtler look with a type of ‘broken zigzag’ design, giving a more traditional, classic look.

The main difference between the two is the cuts used during installation. If you look closely, you will notice that the Chevron pattern cuts the ends of the wood or tile at a 45 degree angle. They join with another 45 degree edge in order to make a right angle, thereby creating this arrow-like pattern.

Choosing the material

There is a variety of choice available to create your perfect herringbone look and suit your budget.  From the floors to the walls, it’s easy to create a gorgeous look that will stand the test of time with wood, vinyl planks, tile, porcelain, and even marble.

Various hardwoods can be used to create a herringbone floor including Red Oak, White Oak, Maple, Sapele, Hickory and Walnut. The distinctive woodgrain and colour of each hardwood add their unique touch to the final design outcome – White Oak, for instance, has a straight grain with light-coloured sapwood and light-to-dark heartwood. Hardwood floors, with proper care, can last for generations.

A great option is engineered wood planks (engineered wood or hardwood veneer over a hardwood plywood base) which are available in a wide variety of colours, finishes, textures and sizes, allowing you to choose a truly individual combination. Broad planks are suited to a contemporary look whilst narrow planks will fit an urban or industrial decor scheme.  Bamboo and reclaimed wood tiles are also great choices.

An affordable choice for a quality, luxurious floor, is herringbone luxury vinyl tiles (LVT). These offer a natural looking, textured finish with the benefits of water resistance, so are low maintenance yet practical in any area of the home.

Laminate flooring is another affordable option which gives durability and a natural looking finish to suit your budget.  These are also easier to install and maintain.

For the kitchen and bathroom

In areas exposed to water like the bathroom and kitchen, you can use ceramic or stone tiles with a timber look, arranged in a herringbone pattern to achieve your specific design goal.

Wood effect ceramic tiles laid in a herringbone pattern offer an aesthetic but practical alternative to traditional timber or engineered wood flooring options in wet area applications. Bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms are exposed to moisture with wood-based options running the risk of warping and mould. Timber look tiles in ceramic or stone deliver the same timeless design outcome without the hassle of humidity-related problems.

LVT flooring is also suited to wet areas as it is water resistant, and it is durable so withstands high foot traffic areas. This makes it a practical choice for both kitchens and bathrooms which gives a luxurious, elegant look.  Laminate flooring is another, very affordable option which is also easy to clean and stands the test of time.

If you want a wood floor for the kitchen, it is best to choose engineered wood as it is less susceptible to moisture and changes in temperature.  This is a look that can easily be achieved using laminate or LVT flooring though, without the worry.

Another great feature is that the zigzag pattern of herringbone flooring gives the illusion of movement, so it lends small spaces a sense of depth and spaciousness, making it ideal for bathrooms and smaller kitchens.

Colours

Herringbone flooring comes in a wide range of colours as well as variations.  You can choose the perfect combination to suit your home whether its a contemporary or traditional style.  Grey wood flooring is a very popular trend right now and looks incredibly elegant in the lounge and hallway, while a wood effect always looks gorgeous in a country style kitchen.

What’s more, herringbone parquet flooring can be installed in a number of different colours and finishes, to suit your taste and compliment your existing home décor. How your herringbone parquet is installed can determine how prominent or how subtle the finish is, too. If you prefer a more natural look, this can be achieved using lighter-toned wood with little graining. If you prefer a bolder, statement look, opt for a mid-toned wood with lots of character that will shine through once the floor is installed.

There are some general rules which can come in handy when choosing the right colour. Dark flooring looks great with natural light, larger areas, light wall colourings and to create a cosy space.  Light flooring is suited to smaller spaces, helps to brighten up rooms and works well with pastel colours where you can easily create contrast with coloured accessories.
