How to look after your carpet

Once your perfect carpet is installed, it’s important to look after it.  Frequent cleaning and dealing with any incidents quickly will keep your carpet looking good for years to come.

Vacuum regularly and more frequently in high traffic areas.

Clean spots and spills quickly with products that do not damage the carpet or cause it to resoil quicker.

Professionally deep clean your carpets every 12 to 18 months to remove embedded dirt and grime.

Stop dirt at the door by using mats outside and in, taking your shoes off when you enter the house and changing your air filters to reduce airborne dust particles.

Carpet maintenance

Vacuuming

This is the easiest and most effective way to keep your carpet clean.  It removes dust, dirt, allergens and particles so improves the air you breathe as well.

Dirt has abrasive qualities and can actually erode the backing of carpet over time, when it is repeatedly ground in by everyday foot traffic, so it is important to remove it regularly.

You should vacuum your carpets at least once a week, but bear in mind that with heavier foot traffic and/or pets, it will need to be vacuumed more often.

Slow and steady is the way to vacuum, ensuring that you cover corners and crevices where dust can built. Make use of the attachments provided to make this easier.

As you vacuum your carpet, pass the vacuum cleaner back and forth slowly. When there are so many other chores and duties requiring your time, it can be very tempting to move the vacuum as quickly as you can, to speed up the process. However, this does not allow the vacuum adequate time to pick up everything in the carpet fibers, and so it will not be as effective.

Instead, run the vacuum slowly in one direction, and then pull it back towards you. Move on to the next section of carpet, allowing the vacuum to slightly overlap the area you just cleaned, to allow for the lack of brush or suction at the very edge of the vacuum head.

Remember to replace or empty vacuum bags when they are half to two-thirds full as this improves the efficiency of the vacuum.

Choose the right vacuum

Make sure you choose the right vacuum for your home as they excel in different areas.  It may be a good idea to invest in more than one to handle all your cleaning challenges.  For example, upright vacuums are ideal for large carpeted rooms while a cordless handheld one makes cleaning stairs a lot easier.

For cut pile carpets, a vacuum cleaner fitted with a beater bar and/or brushes is recommended and for loop pile carpets, one without a beater bar or brushes is most suitable.  Make sure the height is set correctly before starting.

If you have carpeting in your home, you probably know that not all vacuums are created equal. While some vacuums are designed for hardwood or tile, if you’re looking to clean carpeted areas, you’re going to need something that has enough suctioning power to pull dirt and debris from even high pile carpets. Luckily, there are plenty of options available.

Clean up spills straight away

Spills will always happen, especially if you have kids.  Dealing with them straight away means you can minimise any damage.

The most important carpet commandments to keep in mind are to work quickly and never rub. Dab cleaning solution onto the trouble spot immediately—the longer you wait, the harder it will be to remove the stain. Then, blot with paper towels or a clean cloth, as this gently puts a small amount of pressure on the liquid, helping to soak it up instead of letting it set in. Remember to blot from the outside in to prevent the spill from spreading.

Preventive measures are always useful too; if you know the kids will be having messy playtime, lay down an old shower curtain or towel on the carpet first.

Dealing with spills

Be ready!

Make sure you have the right kit to deal with whatever comes your way.  Keep paper towels, microfibre cloths, stain removal agents and brushes handy. You can also make a solution of vinegar and water in a spray bottle to have ready and some bicarbonate of soda is great for soaking up grease and excess moisture, as well as dealing with unwanted odours.

It’s also a good idea to have a steam mop or handheld steam cleaner available. Steam cuts through dirt, grease and grime. It also kills 99.9% of harmful bacteria. And, most importantly, it doesn’t require complementary cleaning agents — which is very important in a family home.

Trim any snags

Never pull a snag.  They will happen at some point and you don’t want to tear the carpet away from the backing.  Instead, trim them neatly with a pair of scissors.

If you have a shag type carpet, you can remove carpet snags by simply snipping away the fuzzy edges of the snags with a pair of sharp scissors. Running your hand over the trimmed area helps blend the cut fibers into the carpeting again. Removing snags in tightly woven berber carpet takes a bit more effort to keep the carpet looking like new.

It’s a good idea to deal with snags as soon as you see them as they will worsen over time.
