Different types of carpet repair

Damaged carpet

Different types of carpet repair

If you have damaged your carpet and it needs to be repaired, there are a number of different ways which you can repair your carpet. We would always recommend getting a professional to carry out the repairs to ensure that you get the best possible result, although many carpet fitters will not be happy with carrying out repairs themselves.

Here we will discuss a number of the most common types of repair and how they are used. Herts Carpets are experienced in all of these types of carpet repairs and we would be very pleased to assist with your carpet repair requirements.

Carpet stretching

If your carpet has not been installed properly then it can be possible to get ripples or bunched up areas in your carpet then you will likely require carpet stretching. In most instances it is possible to carry out carpet stretching to remove any bunched up areas of carpet.

Carpet patching

If you have any area of carpet which has got damaged such as a hole or stain that can’t be removed then you are likely to require a carpet patch. Effectively this is where the carpet is cut, and then a replacement piece of carpet is used to replace the piece which has been cut out. Where possible it is best to use a piece of the original carpet to carry out this repair, so always keep those off-cuts to be on the safe side!

When adding the patch it is very important to ensure that the patch which you are replacing is exactly the right size, and that this is securely fastened when it is added to the carpet.

Loop replacement

If you have a loop pile carpet, such as a berber, then it is sometimes the case that one of the loops gets pulled. When this happens this can run and cause the carpet to have a thread pulled across an area of the carpet. In this instance then it is sometimes possible to replace the area with carpet patching, or alternatively the carpet can be re-glued.

Stair replacement

The first step on the stair tends to wear more than the later stairs on the carpet, and this is a combination of more dirt being deposited on the bottom stair. Therefore it is common for the first step on the stairs to get more damaged than the later steps. When carpet is laid on the stairs, each stair is fitted separately. Therefore it is always recommended to keep some of the offcuts when your carpet is fitted for any repairs.

If you keep the offcuts then you can easily pull up the previous carpet and lay the replacement in its place. Alternatively if multiple steps are required to be re-carpeted then it may be more cost effective to use the carpet from a single room, if for example the hallway, stairs and landing all have the same carpets on them as well as for example the bedrooms. Then you can get a different carpet for one of the bedroom, and pull up the carpet and use this on the stairs.

We have included below a video which demonstrates some of the most common repairs, and how these can be carried out, we would always advocate having a professional carry out the repairs as this will ensure that the finish is high quality.

Herts Carpets specialise in carpet repairs in Hertfordshire, and we always try to reuse as many materials as possible to ensure that we keep the costs as low as possible. Visit our website for all carpet repairs in Hertfordshire and a member of our team will be very pleased to provide a no obligation consultation and provide a free estimate.

Carpet tiles versus traditional carpet

Residential Carpet Tiles

Carpet Tiles Versus Traditional Carpet

Carpet tiles have traditionally been focused for the commercial marketplace, although it is increasingly popular to have carpet tiles in residential properties. There are a significant number of reasons why carpet tiles are useful some of which we have included below.

Carpeting has had a long and storied history that dates all the way back to the 3rd millennium BC, nearly 4000 years ago. Found in Siberia, the oldest surviving carpet is thought to have been created in the 5th century BC. Traditionally, carpets were handmade, composed of thousands of knots intricately woven together to form beautiful works of art too valuable to put on the floor and walk on. Sadly, carpet technology remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years.

The 1930’s changed the carpet industry forever. A few entrepreneurs figured out a method of using a machine to make carpets, and almost overnight they were an item that the emerging middle-class could splurge on. It wasn’t until the late 1950’s with the introduction of synthetic fibers that wall-to-wall carpeting in homes become common-place.

More recently, carpet tiles, a concept nearly as old as carpets themselves, have been modernized. Introduced to the US in the late 1980’s, have been a popular choice for offices and other commercial spaces. Today, carpet tiles are available in assorted sizes and virtually as many colors and styles as regular carpeting.

Article Source: http://ift.tt/28Yzcw8

We have included below a video of installing carpet tiles, demonstrating how quickly they can be laid.

Advantages of Carpet Tiles

  • Easy to install

  • Easy to transport – boxes to fit in the back of your car.

  • Easy to lay on top of laminate/vinyl/concrete with no need for underlay.

  • Easy to fit in awkward shaped rooms.

  • Easy to clean and if a tile is damaged, you can simply replace the tile rather than the whole floor.

  • Easy to lift and take with you if you move home, particularly if you are renting.

Herts Carpets believe that using carpet tiles for flooring is a modern approach to flooring, nevertheless we will accommodate our clients requirements for both carpets and carpet tiles where required!

Carpet Fitting in Hertfordshire – A Guide

Carpet Fitting Hertfordshire

A simple installation of a quality carpet can bring a dramatic effect in your house changing the colour and also the acoustics of the property.  However, the process of fitting a carpet is not as easy it may appear from searching the perfect carpet up to the fitting of the carpet.  When choosing a carpet, Carpets Hertfordshire recommends you to find a carpet with very high quality underlay which is much more comfortable underfoot. Aside from that, the carpet will also last long compare to those with poor cushioning. After choosing your preferred carpet, it is now time for your carpet fitting.  In order to do it perfectly and aesthetically pleasing, follow this short guide by Carpet Fitting Hertfordshire.

Carpet Fitting Guide by the Herts Carpets team, specialising in Flooring Hertfordshire

Before you decide to lay your carpet, let us first tell you that carpet fitting can be a daunting experience for the novice.  If you want to make sure, and you hate compromising the quality of the result, we recommend you to hire the service of a Carpet Fitter in Hertfordshire.  On the other hand, if you are pretty confident that you can do it on your own, here is a short guide that you can follow.

  1. Using Gripper in Some Areas-It takes someone knowledgeable regarding flooring Hertfordshire in order to create a professional carpet fitting.  It is important to start of with gripper, which is initially nailed to the floor. This then serves to keep the carpet stretched and held in place. To do this you place the nail near the edge of fitting gripper.  Use a long bar that will hold the nails.  Hit the long bar in order to keep it in place.  When installing a gripper, you need to find the pipes and electrical wires first and then mark it.  In places that present a danger in using nails, use adhesive instead in keeping the gripper in place.
  1. Underlay-After installing the Gripper, the underlay for the carpets should first be laid.  Roll the underlay and secure it using a staple gun.  Fix the rows by using a duct tape or a carpet tape that is available at Herts Carpets.
  2. Laying the Carpet- Lay first your carpet loosely.  Stand on one edge of the room and start pushing the carpet using your foot.  On the off chance that you need to cut the Carpets, you can do so but remember to leave an overlap on the edge.
  1. Cutting the excess- When cutting the excess, you should start by cutting the Carpets Hertfordshire in a vertical position.
  1. Start the Fitting- Look at the longer part of your room.  Start fitting your Carpet on that area first by using a tucker.
  1. Using Carpet Stretcher-With the help of a carpet stretcher, the Carpets Hertfordshire can perfectly fit on the surface.  By using a carpet tucker, push the excess carpet down into the gripper.

In case that you find this procedure very difficult or you get stuck, you are very welcome to contact Herts Carpets, who specialise in Carpet Fitting in Hertfordshire.

How Is Carpet Made?

You probably walk on carpet every single day, step by step. But have you ever stopped to wonder how it is made? If you haven’t, you may be interested to find out just where your carpet that you see each and every day comes from.

There are two key ways to make carpet, the first way is known as tufting and the second way is known as weaving. Herts Carpets has compiled the following information for those that are interested!

What is Tufting?

Tufting is a method in which carpet is made using computers directing machines to the type of patterns and colours of yarn. Typically, synthetic yarn is used to construct carpeting by the method of tufting.

The first step in tufting is to ensure that the fibres are weaved into the backing of the carpet. The tufting machine is similar to a large sewing machine that uses up to 2,000 needles to pull the yarn together and through the backing. Many machines are as large as twelve feet wide. A process known as a loop pile construction is used to create the carpeting.

The next step in tufting is to dye the colour into the carpeting. Carpeting can be dyed using a single colour or through silk screens to create a pattern or style. The last step a latex coating is applied to the tufted backing. The final step in tufting the carpet in Hertfordshire is to remove all the loose ends left over by shearing. These are checked before the carpeting is sent to the stores in a quality check.

What is weaving?

Weaving can be done by hand or by looms with machines. Fibbers which are known as warps are placed onto a frame vertically and then stretched and pulled it tight to provide tension while the yarn is then weaved over. Once the weaving is finished newer fibres known as wefts are then placed horizontally over the yarn to secure the warps in place.

Carpets that are woven are typically much more expensive than tufted carpets, but the price is due to the natural materials used in the carpeting versus the synthetic use in tufting.

Conclusion

When you are thinking about purchasing a new carpet or replacing the one you got, you may want to research the best type of carpets available to you. Herts Carpets provide both woven and tufted carpets in wide range of fabric, colours and styles. Tufted carpet may be less expensive, but if you are looking for a better quality of carpet, you may opt for a woven carpet for a better long lasting look, combined with high quality underlay it is possible to purchase a cheaper carpet, but still have the same luxurious feel.

Woven carpeting is made from natural fibres which allow a better life expectancy than the synthetic ones from tufting. By doing your research ahead of time, you can ensure you choose the right style and type of carpeting.

The Types of Commercial Carpets

Hertfordshire Commercial Carpets

Commercial carpets are typically designed to provide similar features as carpets for residential properties, including different colours which may match the interior or design of a building, as well as being tough a resilient as commercial premises will typically have higher levels of traffic the the average residential property.

Herts Carpets provide a wide range of commercial carpets, and here we provide you with an overview of the different types of commercial carpets available.

Loop piles are one of the most common and potentially one of the best options for commercial carpeting. In particular they are very well suited to high traffic areas of commercial buildings, such as corridors and lobbies. Low density loop piles are the most common choice for commercial carpets as they have the following features: easy to clean as not a deep pile, low density loop piles also provide a smooth service  so that it possible to push furnishings and wheeled chairs etc across very easily.

Tufted carpets are composed of multiple piles of yarn which is put together to create the tufts. These carpets are stitched as opposed to being woven. Tufted carpets will have a deeper pile than a low density loop pile carpet, but they are still relatively short pile commercial carpets.

Woven carpets are as the name suggests woven. They can be very long lasting and sturdy carpets made from a variety of different fibres.

The budget which you have for your commercial flooring will determine the materials which you select. Most of our customers tend to select commercial carpets which are synthetic as they tend to be better with stains, although a wood deep pile is the preference if you are seeking provide a feeling of luxury for your offices and your clients that are visiting.

Carpets Stinking!

Carpets Stinking!

We found the below post on a forum where a mother was complaining about the smell that was emitting from her carpets.

We have carried out lots of research in this area, and have identified a number of different methods which can potentially help to prevent carpet odours and reduce smells from carpets.

Keeping a carpet clean is one of the key features, but we all know how difficult that can be if you have children or pets.

So we have identified that there are a number of techniques which you can adopt to help to ensure that your carpets smell very fresh. We have included several different ways of cleaning the carpet thoroughly below. In addition you could arrange for a carpet cleaner to come and clean the carpets, which should normally remove any stale odours or smells.

In addition, we have included below some of our favourite tips:

You Will Need:

  • Baking Soda
  • White vinegar
  • Water
  • Spray bottle
  • Vacuum
  • Broom
  • Dustpan
  • Soft cloths

Steps to Remove the Odor:

  1. Baking soda is well known for removing odors. It’s easy to use and effective for removing odors from carpeting.
  2. Sprinkle the area liberally with baking soda. For odors that go beyond the surface, brush the area lightly with a broom to work the baking soda down into the fibers.
  3. Sprinkle an additional layer of baking soda on top of the carpet. Thin layers of baking soda will not work as effectively. Do not be afraid to use enough to get rid of the odor.
  4. Allow the baking soda to set at least overnight on the affected area. Two days is even better, if possible.
  5. After 1-2 days have passed, sweep the top layer of baking soda into the dustpan with a stiff broom. If the baking soda was placed on a rug, it can be shaken off outdoors.
  6. Vacuum the remaining baking soda from the carpet with a strong vacuum. Do not vacuum the top layer first, as this can damage the vacuum.
  7. Smell the area to see if there is improvement. If there is, reapply another layer of baking soda and repeat the process. Baking soda does not damage the carpeting, so the process can be repeated as often as necessary.
  8. If the odor is not removed, vinegar can be applied to the carpet. It can be sprayed on the surface or blotted on with a soft cloth. If the odor is from a liquid that has been absorbed by the carpet, it will be necessary to apply enough vinegar to reach the source of the odor (keep in mind that it may have soaked into the padding as well), but avoid saturating the carpet.
  9. Allow the vinegar to set on the carpet for 15 minutes or so. The acid in the vinegar can work through the odor-causing bacteria in the carpet.
  • Blot with a clean cloth to remove.
  • Rinse by spraying and/or blotting the area with clean water.
  • Press with a clean cloth to absorb any remaining water.
  • Allow to air dry completely.
  • Repeat as necessary until the stain is removed.

We hope that these different techniques work for you. However, if not, we provide high quality carpet cleaning services across Hertfordshire and would be very pleased to assist at very competitive prices.

Through the deals and financing offers, high-quality carpets have become much more accessible to everyone.

With the combination of very cheap high quality underlay, you too can get the feeling of luxury without going over your budget. You now have more choices to choose from, and not just limited to the lower end of the price spectrum.

Everyone knows how expensive carpets can get. Herts Carpets provide a FREE no obligation estimate to all customers with a variety of special offers and discounts throughout the year, and more often than not, they do have some promos to attract more customers.

Why Is Underlay Needed for Carpets?

Underlay Rolls

Why is Underlay Needed?

Underlay helps to provide your carpet with a cushioning feel when you walk on it. It not only feels better below your feet, but it also provides noise insulation much better than just carpeting alone. This is important if you are placing your carpeting in a second floor room. Additionally, in colder weather, underlay helps to provides you with insulation. If you are looking to extend the life of your carpeting, you should opt for underlay as it ensures you will not grind down your carpeting into the floor below it.

  • Underlay

Choosing High Quality Underlay will extend the life of your carpet and make it more comfortable!

How to Choose an Underlay

Underlay can wear out just as fast if not faster than the carpet itself. If you are replacing your current carpet, you will want to inspect the condition of the current underlay to see if it needs to be replaced as well. It’s not a great solution to replace the carpet onto older underlay as it may wear down much further. We recommend buying new underlay with a new carpet to ensure that the carpet achieves the maximum life span.

You should try out the underlay you choose before you end up purchasing this. It’s important to determine how the underlay feels underneath your feet, so you know what to expect. This is a great way to determine the type of underlay you require.

Types of Underlay

There are three different types of underlay. These include the felt underlay which is typically one of the cheapest types available. Felt isn’t used as much as others due to its thinness in nature. Rubber underlay is durable and springy, which also allows it to be breathable. Foam underlay is one of the most popular forms of underlay available as it’s a much more cost-effective solution. It has improved immensely since its introduction which allows it to be an optimal choice for many people.

Conclusion

If you are in the process of replacing or adding new carpets into your home, you will want to think about the type of underlay you will use. It’s best to not place any underlay underneath he carpeting as underlay provides you with a host of benefits including extending the life of your carpeting, Herts Carpets specialise in providing high quality materials and we provide very competitive quotes for Underlay Hertfordshire.

When you live in an area with colder temperatures, underlay can also provide you with additional insulation against the cold. Having a softer area under the carpeting makes for a nicer walking and sitting experience, which is great for those with families, pets, and younger children.

The Summer Is Finally Here – Now Time To Refurbish!

Summer Living Room

Summer Living Room

The Summer has finally arrived and at this time of year many people begin to think about refurbishing their property whilst taking advantage of the potential for some warm weather.

With every new season comes a selection of exciting new trends and ideas. We have included below what we think are some of the most exciting that we have seen for the current season.

Choose the perfect colour scheme

Your choice of colour schemes can have a huge impact on the look and feel of a room, so it’s important that you think about them carefully. As with every new season, there are a whole host of eye-catching colour palettes to choose from to uplift and transform a wide range of spaces.

With this in mind, expect to find a spectrum of bold vivid colours as well as earthier, more natural tones. Above all, Spring/Summer 2016 is about experimenting with a wide range of colours and tones in order to create the perfect ambience.

Above all, it really is the smallest finishing touches that will make the biggest impact to the look and feel of a room!

In order to enhance your favourite spaces further, there are a number of luxurious finishing touches that can make all the difference, especially when it comes to optimising comfort and memorability.

For example, ensuring that you always have a fresh vase of summer  flowers in the room. What’s more, with the days getting longer, daylight is lingering well into the evenings and creeping into the early mornings – so buying black out curtains can really help with a great night’s sleep.

Neither of these come at a big expense, and really make a big difference.

We found some really exciting and interesting ideas for furnishings on the below video, we hope you like them!

The right carpet for your living room

Choosing the right carpet for your living room can make a significant difference to the way the room looks and feels.  therefore it is very important to select the right carpet with complements both your settee, other soft furnishings and your wallpaper.

High quality and luxury carpets in Hertfordshire

Herts Carpets - quality carpets, competitive prices!

Herts Carpets – quality carpets, competitive prices!

High quality and luxury carpets in Hertfordshire

The modern approach is choosing light and neutral colours in ones living area. Accordingly the majority of our customers are choosing grey and white carpets, as opposed to dark colours. White carpets obviously come with a health warning, particularly if you have any pets for children in your house. Grey carpets tend to be more hard-wearing whilst being easier to clean and whilst still maximizing the feel of space and light in living areas.

Darker carpets can also be effective, but they tend to absorb any light, and this can leave the space feeling darker and less spacious. Therefore we tend to point our customers towards neutral carpets, which are easily cleaned and hard wearing.

Matching neutral colours is a lot easier than brighter colours as well therefore the interior designers that we work with tend to err on the side of caution with brighter colours using similar coloured curtains fabrics for sofas cushions mirrors and wallpaper will encourage reflection of light throughout the room and make the room feel more spacious and peaceful.

In addition the use of rugs on top of the carpet can be used to create segments or separated areas in the space this can be an effective way particularly in larger rooms  to create seating areas or similar.

One of the most important element with any carpet is the underlay. Choosing a good underlay will potentially make even a mid-range carpet feel extremely luxurious and make it last longer. We typically provide a minimum of 11mm underlay, which is of very good quality, and will ensure that your carpet lasts for the maximum possible time, whilst giving very good comfort underfoot.

Herts carpets stock a wide range of different colours materials and textured carpets across Hertfordshire and we are confident that we can accommodate your requirements at very cheap prices we will match any written quote in Hertfordshire.
