Choosing the right carpet for your children’s room

Why choose carpet?

Carpet is a popular choice when it comes to flooring for kids’ playrooms and bedrooms.  Importantly, it is soft to help with all the falls and tumbles and has greater traction underfoot.  As an added bonus, it cushions the space and so cuts down on noise from play and chatter, like an insulating layer across the floor.  It is also budget friendly.

Aside from anchoring a room and infusing it with style, carpets and rugs can serve as thermal and sound insulation, as well. This is especially important when it comes to picking a suitable covering for your child’s bedroom floor.

See full text here…

We all know kids mean spilled liquids and food, stains and a lot of running around but luckily there is plenty available on the market to cater for all eventualities.  You can have a carpet that looks good and withstands whatever is thrown at it (quite literally!).

When it comes to choosing carpet though, how do you weigh up durability versus aesthetics?  The good news is that you don’t need to.

Which type of carpet is best?

For kids rooms and playrooms, choose a carpet that is easy clean like twist pile and that is made to be stain resistant.

Consider man-made fibres such as polypropylene, a great ‘family friendly’ fibre as it’s highly stain-resistant.  It is also hard-wearing but also offers a softness for the perfect floor.

If asthma and allergies are not a concern, pure wool carpets offer warmth, softness, sound insulation and comfort. Pure wool is a sustainable fibre with a naturally high level of stain and moisture resistance due to the lanolin in sheep’s wool.

If your kids spend a lot of time playing in their bedrooms, synthetic carpets or floating floors with synthetic rugs offer warmth and softness and are a durable, easy to clean floor covering which may be better suited to your budget.

Scotchgard or Teflon treated carpets are a great choice as they will prevent stains from setting into the fabric.

Consider allergies

If your child suffers from allergies, it is essential to factor this in when choosing carpet for their room.  Nylon is more likely to repel allergens and is cheaper as well as being able to withstand wear and tear.

Nylon is the most effective allergy-controlling carpet fiber. Wool, conversely, should be avoided because allergens and mold can thrive in it. Regardless of material, avoid shag — the shorter the strands, the fewer places the pollen can go. Also choose carpet with tightly woven strands for the same reason.

See full text here…

An all round great choice, Nylon keeps the colour well and the fibres do not tend to unravel. It doesn’t flatten easily and keeps its shape well so is a durable, long lasting option that maintains its finish.

Choose colours carefully

Select a darker, muted colour for the younger children and you can choose lighter colours as they age and are less likely to have so many spills.

For hiding stains, a good colour to plump for is a marbled medium tone that will make any marks harder to spot. Neutral brown, tan or dark shades, as well as concealing imperfections, can add a sense of space to a room and tend to blend in with most types and colours of furniture and furnishings. You could even add play mats to this colour without it looking out of place. Avoid shades that are very light, as they will show dirt up in an instant.

Carpet maintenance

Regular cleaning is a must to help prevent stains.  Vacuum clean at least once a week and have your carpets and rugs cleaned professionally once in a while too.  For cut pile carpets, a vacuum cleaner fitted with a beater bar and/or brushes is recommended and for loop pile carpets, one without a beater bar or brushes is most suitable.

Choose the best vacuum cleaner for homes with children, as it should come with a range of features and tools that make cleaning up messes a lot easier.

It’s also a good idea to have a steam mop or handheld steam cleaner available. Steam cuts through dirt, grease and grime. It also kills 99.9% of harmful bacteria. And, most importantly, it doesn’t require complementary cleaning agents — which is very important in a family home.

Prepare for the worst and take as many preventative measures as you can. With a little planning, you can protect your carpets from the very worst your children throw at it.

With an easy clean carpet and regular cleaning, it can be simple to maintain the finish and prolong the life of your carpet.

Add a rug!

Rugs are a great addition as they give the room a more cosy feel and enhanced comfort for playtime.  You can use them to brighten up a room and they can extend the life of your carpet by taking some wear and tear off the flooring.

Think beyond standard rectangular and square styles, particularly if your child’s room is small. A round rug, for example, can have real presence in a compact room, without overwhelming the space. Round styles also look great in a nursery, placed next to or beneath the crib. And again, go as big as you can – you’ll find that a large rug will make a small space feel bigger than it actually is.

Get the New Nordic Look in your home

New Nordic style flooring

One of the biggest trends in interior design this year, set to remain popular for the foreseeable future, is the New Nordic Look.  It is a cosier, earthier follow up to Scandinavian minimalism with gorgeous luxury wood or laminate floors and light, airy spaces.

How do you achieve the New Nordic Look?

Think light flooring with a simple colour palette and some darker accents around the room to give a homely feel.  With Scandinavian design becoming increasingly focused on textures, warmth and earthly pigments, this interior style is all about making your space look natural and feel welcoming.

Simply adding more earthy colours, more natural materials, and more tactile textures you can create a calming, harmonious timeless space with a tranquil atmosphere. New Nordic still focuses on simple Nordic minimalism, but contrast-rich materials and surfaces create fascinating combinations.

Start from the ground up

The flooring of your home is one of its defining features and quality wooden floors are essential for creating the New Nordic look, whether you are using hardwood or the more budget friendly option of laminate flooring.  Light and natural tones fit perfectly with this earthy, authentic aesthetic.

When choosing between hardwood or laminate flooring, cost is an important consideration with hardwood generally being more expensive to buy and install.  Hardwood has a beautiful look and can be repaired over time by sanding imperfections and refinishing.  Laminate is made from pressed wood and has greater durability, resisting scratches, moisture and wear and tear as well as being easier to clean and maintain.  It does not fade from sunlight as much due to its top coat so can be used in rooms with larger windows. It is important to take your lifestyle into account when choosing between hardwood and laminate flooring. Homes with pets, kids and a busy family life would most likely benefit more from a laminate flooring option.  Whichever you choose, wood has a fantastic aesthetic appeal and gives warmth to any room.

Laminate flooring is a great replicate of a real timber floor; successfully simulating both its texture and unique characteristics. With so many variations to choose from, you can personalise your home by adding character and personality to it at a smaller cost than real wood flooring.

The Kahrs Scandi Natural Oiled Wood Flooring is a great example of this look, as is the Harrow Warm Oak range of laminate flooring by Lifestyle Floors.

Colours

Choose earthy tones like terracotta and burgundy or shades of grey and neutrals.  Keep it simple and opt for the colours of nature in muted hues.  White on white is always a favourite of Scandanavian design and with the New Nordic trend you can experiment more as well. Colour blocking can give a softer look on your walls and dark accents work well too in dark blues, sage green and indigo while statement furniture in dark colours adds a dramatic touch.  Textures on walls also adds a tactile feel and a gallery wall looks spectacular.

Match prints in different sizes, strictly in neutral colors or in black and white. Go for abstract motives, watercolors, portraits and botanical subjects. Mix then different frames, in black, white, or wood, in groups, or alternatively choose only one big statement print and decorate with that.

See full text here…

Texture

Rugs and cushions are great for adding texture but make sure you are using natural materials.  In the warmer months, linen is a great option whereas wool and mohair are ideal for the wintertime. For the bedroom, choose relaxed bed linen and curtains.

This aesthetic is inspired by nature with an ethos of quality materials.  Wooden floors and shelves with rattan, aged leather and wool give a stunning look with a touch of Scandi chic.

Raw materials such as sheepskin, wool and mohair are often used for cushions, throws and rugs, and layering these textures creates a warm and cosy atmosphere. Geometric prints are becoming increasingly popular for carpets and rugs.

Finishing Touches

As well as rugs and cushions, plants are great for decorations and popular in stylish interior décor. If keeping them alive isn’t your thing, dried branches and flowers look just as good.  Earthenware, textured stones and candles work well too for an sleek, natural look.  Lighting is important too, add in floor and table lamps with candles and lanterns to give a sense of light and warmth.

Make sure clutter is tucked away in cupboards though, the minimalism side of Scandinavian design is still alive and well!

Clutter is a big no in Nordic homes, which is why clever storage is a must, to keep anything unattractive that might be considered as clutter tidied away.

For any unsightly objects, concealed storage is a must. Sideboards and other storage units should still be stylish, but practical too.
