How important is your vacuum cleaner?

We all know that keeping floors clean in the home is essential, but how important is your vacuum cleaner?  Does it really matter which one you have?

What vacuum cleaner is best for carpets?

It is important to keep carpets clean, for a number of reasons.  It helps keep your home healthy by removing the inevitable dust, dirt, allergens and bacteria that build up.  Vacuuming is by far by the best way to clean carpets, and needs to be done thoroughly and regularly to maintain a clean living space. How important is your vacuum cleaner?

The better you maintain your carpet, the better it will look and last.  The backing of the carpet can actually be eroded by dirt over time, as it has abrasive qualities when ground in by foot traffic everyday.  Carpets need to be vacuumed once a week at a minimum, and more if you have pets or in rooms with heavy foot traffic.

Your vacuum cleaner is important as it needs to do the job properly to remove all the dust, dirt and allergens from the fibres.  It doesn’t need to be a top of the range, expensive one but it does need to have good suction.

When vacuuming. move slowly with a repetitive, overlapping motion in multiple directions to really get the suction working on all the fibres.  This will also help to hide high traffic marks.  Make sure you change the bag on the vacuum or empty it regularly.

An upright vacuum is best for large rooms as it will collect all the dust and dirt that you can’t see.  A cordless, or stick, vacuum is a great addition as it makes cleaning stairs, stair runners and hard to reach areas a lot easier.  For furniture and upholstery, a small handheld vacuum is always handy and makes cleaning up spot messes and pet hair a lot quicker.  You can do all of this with attachments on a  multi-purpose vacuum, but the cordless and handheld ones are effective ways to save time (and your back when it comes to the stairs!) if you want to invest in them.

For cut pile carpets, a vacuum cleaner fitted with a beater bar and/or brushes is recommended and for loop pile carpets, one without a beater bar or brushes is most suitable.  Make sure the height is set correctly before starting.

Can I use a vacuum on other types of flooring?

Vacuum cleaners aren’t just for carpets, they can take a lot of the hard work out of cleaning most types of flooring.  For hardwood orHow important is your vacuum cleaner? engineered wood flooring, use a vacuum cleaner once a week to get rid of all the dirt and dust as part of your cleaning regime.

To avoid leaving any scratches, never use any attachments such as beater bars or hard brushes.  In fact, it is best not to use the power upright vacuum cleaner that you would use for carpets at all, because it most likely has a beater bar.  These are designed to stir up the dirt at the base of carpet fibres.  You may be able to turn the beater bar off but there is still the risk of scratches from the wheels.  A cordless vacuum is best as it is light, and many are made specifically to be used on hardwood floors.

Laminate floors are also likely to be scratched by heavy vacuum cleaners and beater bars over time, so again use a light cordless one where possible.  The same is true for  LVT (luxury vinyl tile) flooring.  As with carpet, the better you look after your flooring, the longer it will last.

How about robotic vacuum cleaners?

Robotic vacuums cleaners like Roombas are great for getting rid of surface level dirt, pet hair and dust without How important is your vacuum cleaner?any effort on your part. They need minimal maintenance are they are self-navigating, self-cleaning and self-charging. You simply set them to spot, quick or scheduled cleaning.  One of their great advantages is that they can maneuver themselves under and around most furniture.  Some newer models also have double HEPA filters to pick up all allergens, which is ideal if you have allergy sufferers in the house.

You can use them on carpets and hard floors, they should move from different types of flooring seamlessly.  They are not designed to deep-clean though, for rugs or carpet.

They are not yet able to navigate stairs, so you will have to move them around the levels in a house and use another option to vacuum the stair themselves.  They are not designed to deal with liquids either, so can cause issues with pet bowls and messes.  Another disadvantage of many is that they are noisy and the dust bin needs to be emptied frequently.

Parquet flooring

Parquet flooring has always been a popular choice for the home, but what exactly is it and how do you pick the right style and material for your home?

What is parquet flooring?

Parquet flooring refers to a style of wood flooring, cut into small blocks or strips and used for a decorate effective, a sort of geometric Parquet flooringmosaic.  The wood slats are arranged in repeating patterns throughout the floor.  These patterns can be squares, triangles, chequerboard, basket wave, lozenges or even sun effects.

The most popular choice now is a herringbone pattern. This design favourite looks great in the kitchen as well as the living room and hallway.  It can also be installed in the bathroom using tiles.

At first glance, it can be easy to confuse a herringbone pattern with a chevron one.  The main difference between them is that herringbone floors are rectangle boards, whereas chevron boards are cut at an angle.

An easy way to tell them apart is that herringbone has a subtler, more traditional look with a type of ‘broken zigzag’ design.  Chevron has an arrow-like pattern as the ends are cut to a 45 degree angle, then joined to make a right angle.

Parquet flooring looks stunning but bear in mind that it is not easy to lay. Mistakes will be eye catching, so this is a job it’s probably best to call the experts in for.

What is the best material to pick?

Originally, parquet flooring was always made of thin, solid wood pieces.  Walnut, oak, maple and cherry all make beautiful parquet floors with that rich, textured look and warmth underfoot.  These days you do have a choice though, as engineered wood is a great alternative.

Engineered wood will give you the same look as solid wood. These planks are made of engineered wood or hardwood veneer over aParquet flooring hardwood plywood base, which are available in a wide variety of colours, finishes, textures and sizes, allowing you to choose a truly individual combination.

An imitation flooring using a different material is also an option.  An affordable choice for a quality, luxurious floor, is luxury vinyl tiles (LVT). These offer a natural looking, textured finish. They are water resistant, making them a low maintenance choice which is practical in any area of the home.

Laminate flooring is another budget friendly option which is durable and hard-wearing with a natural looking finish.  These planks are also easier to install and maintain.

How do I choose the right one?

Colour, style and material all make a big difference to the look of parquet flooring.  Obviously budget is a big consideration as well and will probably dictate the material that you choose.

If you Parquet flooringare choosing the flooring first, as the feature of the room, you can choose the rest of the interior to complement it.  A mixed range of wood hues in a herringbone pattern will create the ultimate in dramatic flooring.  Otherwise, it is important to get the right hue to match your fixtures and furnishings.

In a room with coloured or wooden furniture and/or units, matching the undertones with the flooring will give the area a harmonious look.  This is simple to do using a colour wheel, there are plenty available online.  Make sure you stay in the same dominant wood tone, this will be cool, neutral or warm.

For a sleek and modern decor, a chevron pattern is ideal and the wood gives a warmer look to the room.  Alternatively, whitewashed wood continues the cool look in a soft way.

Can I have carpet in the bathroom?

Bathrooms are high moisture environments, so other types of flooring are generally preferred to carpet in the bathroom.  However, it is entirely possible if you want to have it!  After all, we do live in a cold country and the winter can be a challenge for keeping warm.  Here is what you need to consider if you choose carpet in the bathroom.

Advantages of carpet in the bathroom

carpet in the bathroomQuite simply, it’s warm and soft underfoot!  We choose carpet so often for our flooring because of this, the feeling of a luxury, silky floor.  It makes a difference, especially first thing in the morning on a cold day.

Not only is it comfortable to walk on, carpet is a great thermal insulator.  It keeps the heat in, giving you warmer rooms and a lower heating bill.  It absorb sounds too, which means less noise when you are getting ready in the morning.

It is not slippery underfoot, so there is less chance of a fall with carpet.  Plus, it is much softer to land on in case of any accidents.

Carpet can be a very economical option as there is a wide price range to choose from. From budget carpet tiles to luxury velvet pile, there is an option for every wallet.  Plus there is an almost endless choice of colours, patterns and finishes to choose from to get the perfect look and feel underfoot.

What type of carpet is best for bathrooms?

A synthetic, or man-made, fibre is best for bathroom carpets, like nylon, polyester or polypropylene, that is mildew and stain resistant.  These types of fibres dry out muchcarpet in the bathroom quicker than natural ones like wool.  Many carpets are made of a mix of natural and man-made fibres, but these are best avoided for the bathroom.

You also need to choose the pile of the carpet carefully.   This refers to the fibre loops of the carpet – these loops are attached to the backing of the carpet, then either left as they are or cut at a length and/or angle.  You want a lower pile, looped carpet, meaning the loops are tight with shorter fibres.  The surface of the carpet has a smoother finish, as it is dense and flat.  This lower pile dries faster and will absorb less moisture, so is the best choice for carpet in the bathroom.  Berber carpets are an example of looped pile.  It is also sensible to choose a carpet that has a waterproof backing.

Carpet tiles are a good idea, as you will be able to replace them individually, as opposed to the entire floor, should they get mouldy over time.  Low pile is common in carpet tiles so they will be quicker drying, and they are usually made of synthetic fibres.

Other things to consider

As always, a regular schedule of vacuuming is essential for maintaining carpet in the bathroom.  The cleaner you keep the carpet, the less likely it is to develop mould.  It is essential to prevent the carpet from developing mould or harboring bacteria.  Wet vacuums are available if you want to invest in one, to get as much moisture out of the carpet in the bathroomcarpet as possible.  If you have a normal vacuum, make sure you mop up any excess water with a sponge as soon as you can.  A bathmat is useful as well, to help keep water off the carpet.

If you don’t think that carpet in the bathroom is the best choice for your home, there are some ideal alternatives.

Vinyl flooring is popular as it is durable, has good water resistance and a slip-resistant finish.  Both scratch, fade and dent resistant, it lasts a long time, making it very cost effective.  It is also very easy to clean.

Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring gives you a hard-wearing floor with a beautiful finish.  There is a variety of finishes and designs options to get the perfect floor for your bathroom.  It has excellent soundproofing qualities, great acoustics, and is slip and spill resistant.  This easy to maintain option also keeps its finish for years.

Laminate flooring is another perfect option, as it does not absorb moisture so no mold or bacteria can grow in it.  It is hypoallergenic, stain resistant and simple to keep clean.  Laminate has a softness underfoot thanks to its shock absorbent qualities, making it ideal flooring for the bathroom.

How to keep your wood floors looking great

Newly installed wood floors look stunning in any home, but how do you keep them looking great?

Solid wood

If you have invested in a beautiful, durable solid wood floor, it’s a good idea to maintain it properly from the start, so it will last you for decades.  As with any flooring, the more you can do to prevent damage, the better.  Use protective pads under furniture wherever possible so they don’t leave scratch marks.  Door mats are also great to use by exterior doors to keep as much dirt off the floor as How to keep your wood floors looking greatpossible, especially if you have small children and pets.  Make sure wet boots and shoes are kept off the floor as much as you can to maintain a dry environment inside.

For everyday cleaning, just brush the floor with a soft broom or dustpan and brush, to get rid of dirt and dust.  Then use a vacuum cleaner once a week.  Don’t use any attachments such as beater bars or hard brushes, as they are more likely to leave scratches.

Try not to mop too often, around once a month, as you want to keep the floor as dry as possible to avoid any warping.  When you do need to mop, use hot water as it will quickly evaporate.  A microfiber mop is best as it is soft and designed not to leave any streaks.  Spray mops are also good as long as you ensure the area is thoroughly dry afterwards.

Spills will happen, especially in the kitchen, so just make sure they are dealt with as soon as possible to keep the floor dry.  Wipe them up quickly with a microfiber cloth to avoid stains.

Wear and tear inevitably happens over the years and for the most part will add character to your floor.  If there are any really deep scratches or marks that bother you, you can have them sanded away.  When the shine of the floor starts to fade, use wax to renew it (usually only every few years) if you like a high sheen effect.  Solid wood floors can be refinished or resurfaced if they get badly damaged over time, but prevention is always better and cheaper.

Engineered wood

Engineered wood floors are usually made up of a layer of real wood on the surface with a protective seal on top, and layers of plywood beneath.  This construction makes the flooring more stable and able to cope with differing temperatures. How to keep your wood floors looking great

The cleaning process is very similar to that of a solid wood floor.  It is important to use soft materials, like microfiber cloths and brushes with soft bristles, to avoid scratching the floor.  Sweep daily (or as often as you need) to deal with dirt and dust.  Use a vacuum cleaner once a week but make sure it is either a special one for wood floors, or set to the bare floor setting, ie no attachments like beater bars.  If you have a roomba, make sure it has rubber wheels, not metals or stiff brushes underneath.

Mop weekly with warm water, either with a microfiber mop or spray mop.  Make sure the mop is damp, not soaking wet, to keep excess moisture away.  Also ensure that is it thoroughly dry before anyone walks on it.

Clean up spills as soon as possible and use all the preventative measures you can, like pads under furniture, doormats and removing shoes.

Engineered floors can only be refinished if they have a top wear layer that is over 3mm thick.  It cannot be sanded like a solid wood floor, but instead scratches can be concealed.  For this, you can use a floor repair wax kit or a felt tip pen that matches the floor colour.

Imitation wood

Laminate and vinyl are both great options for a lower cost, durable imitation wood floor.  They are easy to clean and maintain but need different cleaning methods to real wood.

How to keep your wood floors looking greatLaminate is hard-wearing and resilient but cannot be refinished, so it is important to prevent damage from occurring.  Don’t let spills sit, clean them up immediately with a cloth and don’t wear high heels on the flooring.  Although laminate is less susceptible to scratching, it is hard to get rid of any marks.  If they do happen, a good tip is to use a tennis ball to try and remove them.  To clean, use a soft broom or brush to sweep, or a vacuum with no attachments.  Mopping should be done infrequently, around once a month or every two months, to avoid water seeping into the seams.  Use a microfiber mop if possible, or if you are using a normal mop make sure you wring it out until it is nearly dry before using it on the floor.  Avoid any oil based cleaning products and never wax laminate or use polish on it.  There are special laminate cleaning products available.

Vinyl is resilient, low maintenance and in many cases, waterproof.  Use preventative measures as with other types of flooring, like furniture pads, doormats and removing shoes. Regular sweeping and vacuuming will take care of the majority of the cleaning, and make sure to clean spills up with a cloth as soon as you can to avoid staining.  Mopping is easy with vinyl, just use a mop with warm water and liquid detergent.  It is resistant to water and stains, so you don’t need to worry about it drying quickly, as it won’t warp when exposed to excessive water.

Stair runner trends

Stair runners are a great way to transform the look of your hallway, bring in colour and texture and add softness underfoot.  There are so many different styles to choose from with geometric patterns, stripes and bold colours on trend this year.

Why have a stair runner?

The growing trend for hardwood floors and stairs has also led a rise in stair runners. Instead of wall to wall carpet on the stairs, stair Stair runner trendsrunners leave a few inches of hardwood visible on either side.

In many homes, the staircase is one of the first things you see when you open the front door, so you want it to make an impression and a stair runner does the job perfectly.  The contrast with the hardwood is eye catching and gives a stylish and put together look.  It adds warmth to the staircase and you can easily update the look by replacing the stair runner.

Stair runners make the stairs safer, as they help prevent slipping by providing more grip underfoot. If any falls do occur, is it much softer to land on carpet than wood.  It is also easier on your joints to have carpet underfoot as you walk up and down stairs.  Plus they reduce the noise if you are trying not to wake the whole household up.

Another advantage of a stair runner is that it reduces the wear and tear on the wood, so it won’t need to be refinished as often.

What is on trend?

BroadloomStair runner trends carpets that are cut specially for the stairs are becoming more popular now than pre-cut stair runners that have a border.  Both are still widely available though, so you can choose what suits your staircase best.

Contrasting the colour of the carpet with the wood is a current trend that looks stunning. If you are choosing a patterned carpet, then pick one that has a secondary colour that complements the wood tones.  This gives a sense of flow through the hallway and stairs.  A strong repeating pattern is a great choice if you are going to extend the runner to cover the landing area and/or hallway.  The secondary colour can also be used for flooring in the surrounding rooms, to give the feeling of continuity throughout the house.

With so much time being spent at home these days, many people are choosing bolder colours and patterns to reflect their personality in their homes.  Jewel tones, animal prints and textures are all popular and help make the staircase a feature.

To add a contemporary twist to a classic design scheme, herringbone patterns are modern and sophisticated, with the advantage of making the stairs appear wider.  Also on trend, geometric patterns are eye catching and can be as bold or subtle as you like.

Stripes always look stylish and contemporary.  With so much choice available, you can create stunning colour combinations to fit with your existing decor.  To make the area appear larger, choose vertical stripes as they create the illusion of more height by drawing the eye up the staircase. Horizontal stripes are ideal to make narrow staircases seem wider.

Carpet rods are no longer common, as you can achieve a much cleaner look without.

What is the best carpet material for the stairs?

Generally, a low pile (3/4″ or less) is best for stair runners, as it will give greater stability underfoot on the stairs.  It is also very Stair runner trendsdurable so will stand up to wear and tear better.  With a looped style, such as Berber, make sure it is a good quality one and properly installed.

A wool carpet is always a great investment that lasts and resists stains and dirt well, whilst retaining its shape.  There are more affordable, man-made fibres like polypropylene which have similar qualities, but go for a shorter pile so it does not flatten as easily.

For the best of both worlds, a wool and polypropylene mix is easy to clean and keeps its appearance well, while wool and nylon mixes are very durable and also have good appearance retention.
