How to achieve the perfect stair runner for your home

Stair runners are an extremely popular choice for many households due to their elegance and individuality. They’re also commonly seen in child friendly homes, due to the non slip/safety elements related to installing carpet on stairs.

However, with so many options to choose from, deciding on your new stair runner can be a difficult task. After all, you want your stair runner to make a statement for the right reasons!

1. Choose a durable carpet 

As stairways are high traffic areas, carefully choosing your stair runner is essential for longevity and achieving a long-lasting statement.

Be sure to choose a durable carpet style because your runner will work HARD! Stairs get a lot of use and suffer a lot of impact with the added force of gravity as feet descend stairs. Any style of carpet can be used on stairs BUT nylon and wool are the most desirable for runners. Both choices tend to be very durable and offer the most high-end look.

Another thing to consider is carpet pile. A high pile carpet will show wear more quickly than a low pile carpet. When looking to achieve the perfect stair runner for your home, consider the design of your carpet and its colour/pattern. A great way to do this effectively is by gathering samples and making sure your chosen runner works well alongside the existing décor of your home. Additionally, if you’re wanting to make a statement then carpet runners are great features to have a play around with when working with new patterns and colours:

Stair runners can be a smart place to inject a little colour into your scheme, for several reasons. First, you don’t tend to live on the stairs so much as pass through them and see them when you enter and exit, so the colour isn’t likely to overwhelm you.

Once you’ve decided on the type of carpet you’d like for your stair runner, you should then consider how you’d like it installed. There are typically two installation styles; waterfall installation and Hollywood wrap/unholstered installation.

WATERFALL INSTALLATION:  This is the most common installation and it takes the least amount of carpet.  Essentially, the carpet is attached at the base of each riser, allowing the carpet to cascade over the tread – hence, waterfall.  This application is fantastic for patterned or striped carpets as the design runs fluidly down a straight staircase.

HOLLYWOOD WRAP or UPHOLSTERED INSTALLATION:  In this application, the carpet is completely hugging each step.  The carpet is wrapped under the nose of each step and also attached at the base of each riser.  This installation requires more carpet and more installation time, but it gives a more tailored and refined look to the stair runner. 4. Consider the smaller details

Before finalising your carpet runner, make sure the finished look will work with the rest of your homes interior by considering the finer details. Think about the existing look of your stairs, and how the stairway features will contrast with the runner.

Stair runners can bring a sense of grandeur to interiors with sumptuous colours and patterns. They certainly can look the part but for a stair runner to really work it should be part of a more considered scheme. Whereas a carpet can instantly fit with an interior scheme, a runner is trickier. It must be in proportion with the stairs, the condition and finish of the exposed timber of the stairs needs consideration along with the style of poles that need to be thought through. 5. Maintain it!

Regular maintenance is key. As the stairway is a high traffic and busy area of the home, it is vital to keep your stair runner clean with regular care.

A large contributor to wear is dirt and grit on the surface of your runner. The dirt causes friction against the fibre of your carpet, this acts like sandpaper against the yarn. Avoid this by cleaning regularly, gently using a suction vacuum.
